Job Description: Reporter Intern
The interns of "Planet Harmony” will be responsible for
contributing content for a multi-media site produced by and for communities of
color.
This internship is unlike other broadcast internships- no part of this
project will have you transcribing endless tape or untangling XLR cables.
Instead you will be working directly and remotely with the pH Editors to
develop your own story ideas, hone your reporting skills and deepen your
understanding of environmental issues impacting your own community. Some of the stories you make for the pH
podcast will be featured on our nationally syndicated sister show, PRI’s Living
on Earth. This is a unique opportunity
to learn about environmental reporting, help shape a brand new program while
getting paid (a stipend).
Responsibilities
Job tasks include, but are not limited to:
· Work from your community to create
original and compelling radio multimedia
programming.
· Propose
and research story/segment ideas for podcast.
· Work
with pH Editors to turn those story ideas
· Record
two-way interviews with scientists, policy makers, authors and activists
· Report
on feature stories from your own back yard.
· Audio/video
editing of self-produced stories
· Make
frequent blog entries as well as contribute to other pH social media platforms
·
Represent pH at public events at
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s)
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a combination of
education and work experience that will allow him/her to thrive in this
position. Necessary skills include:
· Access to recording equipment/ some
technical proficiency capturing A/V
·
Proven ability to work well
independently.
· Ability to develop an overall story-arch and
tell stories creatively.
· Must be interested
and aware of many of today's environmental issues as well as have a creative eye for finding under- and
un-reported stories in your own backyard.
· Excellent communication and organizational
skills.
· Strong interest and knowledge of news,
environmental news and passionate about
community.
Opportunities
Planet Harmony has a grant provided by the National Science
Foundation. Because of this funding we
can offer our interns
· A
stipend of $500 for participating in pH for a semester (5 months)
· Possibility
of travel to cover stories, attend meetings and events relevant to our mission
· Exposure
to national broadcast audience via Living on Earth
· Advancement
into leadership positions in the project
